Betty Loveland 1909-2004

Betty Loveland who died aged 94 on the 28th January  had a long and interesting life, spending her childhood living above her father’s boot makers’ shop in High Street next to what was then Blakes.  She attended Maidstone Grammar School for Girls, and then trained as a dispenser with Stonhams in Bank Street.  For many years she worked in the pharmacy of the Kent County Ophthalmic Hospital, moving to live in College Road in the 1920’s.  She was brought up in the Baptist Church but as a teenager she said she rebelled and was lured across the road to All Saints’ where she was confirmed.  She was a regular communicant at 8 o’clock and enjoyed Evensong until her failing sight prevented this.

Among her many interests were the Girl Guides, Choral Union, Kent County Cricket Club, Mothers’ Union.  She loved to recall the time when she was invited to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her work with National Savings during the War.  She also had happy memories of  flying for the first time at the age of 83 when Michael and I took her on holiday to Switzerland.

Betty had a vast knowledge on many subjects to do with nature, plants, trees and birds and a walk with her was always interesting. We have been friends for forty years since we moved to College Road with many happy memories of the time spent with her and shall miss her greatly.
