Tsunami Relief Concert

given by

The Oxford Singers

At 7.30pm on Saturday the 5th February The Oxford Singers came to All Saints Church to present a concert of Ancient and Modern Choral Music including vocal and organ solos.

The Oxford Singers with the Mayor and Mayress of Maidstone

The Mayor and Mayoress of Maidstone, Councillor and Mrs Peter Hooper were in attendance along with a very enthusiastic audience who greatly appreciated the musicianship of the performers.

The concert was the idea of Theresa Weir who with the other members of The Oxford Singers are all ex-students of various Oxford colleges. The group have performed individually and with different choral groups volunteered to come together as The Oxford Singers for this concert. Richard Hills, the musical director for the concert, was organ scholar at Exeter College, Oxford, where he read Music, and directed Exeter College Chapel Choir.

All the musicians are very competent indeed, and most have featured as either choristers or soloists on CD recordings

The first half of the programme began with O Thou, the Central Orb by Charles Wood and progressed through pieces by Duruflé, Tallis, Vivaldi, Hadley, Bach and Purcell. The piece by Vivaldi was Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera a soprano solo sung beautifully by Charlotte Shipley. Matthew O’Donovan played to great effect Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B Minor BWV544. Evening Hymn by Purcell featured Theresa Weir singing the alto solo while Rejoice in the Lord Always (The Bell Anthem) also by Purcell featured the trio sections sung by Sarah Barham (alto), Ewen McGregor (tenor) and Tim Burke (bass).

After the interval four sections from  Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater were followed by another organ piece Prelude and Fugue in G BMW 541 played by Tim Burke. A new and excellent setting of God so Loved the World was sung to music by Janz. The difficult Tavener piece The Lamb brought peace and serenity to the church but after a respectful pause the organ came back to life with Richard Hills playing Allegro Deciso (from Evocation op. 37) by Marcus Dupré. The concert ended with Parry’s My Soul, There Is A Country followed by Jerusalem in which the audience were invited to participate.

The concert raised a total of £621.70 which has been donated to Red Cross Maidstone Tsunami Relief.

Hopefully The Oxford Singers will return to All Saints again in the future when their music making can be enjoyed once again.
