Christian charity launches walking challenge along the Pilgrims' Way

A chance to brave the outdoors in aid of a good cause has this week been launched by the Christian based national disability charity John Grooms. A three day sponsored event to be held from 11-15 July 2003 will follow the picturesque Pilgrims' Way in Kent, helping to raise awareness of John Grooms and its work with physically disabled people.

Introducing the campaign for walkers was Reverend Canon Roger Royle, Vice President of John Grooms and presenter of BBC Radio 2's Sunday Half Hour. The real challenge will cover 45 miles from Rochester to Canterbury, and is open to walkers full of energy and enthusiasm and aged over 18. It is also packed full of historical interest including the tomb of Thomas à Becket and Leeds Castle. Each walker is asked to commit to a minimum of £500 sponsorship, with John Grooms supporting their efforts with fundraising tips and advice.

Canon Royle, dressed in period costume to highlight the medieval connection, was keen to emphasise the opportunity to take in the history whilst raising much needed funds for the charity. He said: "What better way to take in the medieval heart of Kent whilst raising money for John Grooms. It will also be a thrilling occasion to experience the sights and sounds of the countryside scenery."

John Grooms Events Officer Paul Kwatia added his encouragement for participants. He said: "As a charity we rely on support from enthusiastic volunteers who give their time to fundraising. Walkers can also meet like minded people committed towards highlighting disability issues. We are sure that everyone will find the event to be a fulfilling experience."
