Spring Singalong 2005
Sing Around the World

From Monday morning the 14th March to Friday morning the 18th March All Saints church was full of children, teachers and helpers from Maidstone Area Infant Schools for the annual Spring Singalong. During the five days of the Singalongs over 1,800 children from 26 schools came to the church to Sing Around the World.

Under the leadership of Helen MacGregor, Music Consultant to KCC, the children sang songs from Great Britain, France, Africa, Japan, Australia, Canada and Mexico. For the fist time since these Festivals began seven years ago the church was decorated with banners made by the children at their schools. The banners represented the countries whose songs were sung. Everyone was very grateful for the time given by Roger and Sue Manuell and Brian Cannell who spent the whole day of the Saturday before the first Singalong suspending the banners between the pillars in the nave of the church and in addition inflating and suspending twelve balloons of the Globe which were also suspended over the nave pews. Our own congregation were invited to come and listen to the singing and those who did will also have marvelled at the splendid workmanship of the banners displayed.

As well as singing songs together some schools presented ‘solo’ items. This meant extra learning at the schools concerned – All Saints C of E Primary School, Ditton C of E Infant School, Coxheath Primary School, Madginford Infant School, Thurnham Infant School, St. Stephen’s C of E Infant School, Laddingford C of E Primary School and Park Way Primary School - and we are very grateful for the time given to this

Each Singalong had an audience of parents and friends who came to support the children in their music making. At the end of each Singalong a retiring collection was taken in aid of Demelza House children’s Hospice. The total amount collected was £492.19.

Next year the theme of the Singalongs will be Sing Around Holidays and the dates will be from 10.15am on Monday the 24th April 2006 and the same time each morning until Friday 28th April. With over a year of advance warning hopefully even more of our congregation will be able to come listen to – and perhaps join in with – the singing!
