Prayers and Poems for May

Grace to be not like porridge

O Lord, grant that we may not be like porridge

Stiff, stodgy and hard to stir

But like cornflakes: crisp, fresh and ready to serve.

Thanks to Spring

We thank Thee, Heavenly Father,

For all the lovely Spring,

For primroses and bluebells,

And little birds that sing.

For woods and fields to play in,

For bright blue sky and sea,

For everything we thank Thee.

All beauty comes from Thee.

-- Mary Anderson.

The Call

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life:

Such a Way, as gives us breath:

Such a Truth, as ends all strife:

Such a Life, as killeth death.

Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength:

Such a Light, as shows a feast:

Such a Feast, as mends in length:

Such a Strength, as makes his guest.

Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:

Such a Joy, as none can move:

Such a Love, as none can part:

Such a Heart, as joys in love.

-- George Herbert.

The Protection of Christ

Christ as a light

Illumine and guide me!

Christ as a shield overshadow and cover me!

Christ be under me! Christ be over me!

Christ be beside me,

On left hand and right!

Christ be before me, behind me, about me!

Christ, this day, be within and without me!

-- St Patrick.
