Following Jesus Call

Vicar's letter

The most important single thing a parish priest does is to seek to gather God's people so that together we can follow Jesus instruction to his disciples, 'Do this in remembrance of me'. I am aware that as we are unwell, or as we grow older, this can become more difficult to follow. The Church has recognised this ever since the beginning of its existence. There has always been the practice of communion being taken to those in their homes who cannot come to church. While generally the practice is for the people of God to come to the altar to receive communion, from early accounts we know that those administrating took communion to certain people in the nave of the church. These are good practices for the Church; it is good when they continue so that as we find receiving communion in the usual way we can more easily accept the limitation of our usual practice and do this is a way appropriate to us. Again, for some, the week day Eucharist’s might be a helpful way at certain stages in our lives.

I am aware that some of our week day Eucharist’s may not be at the time most convenient for everyone. It is so important that we hold out to everyone the ideal of the Eucharist every Sunday and when a particular Sunday is not possible for everyone, hopefully one of the week day Eucharist will be possible. So it is important we regularly review the times of our week day Eucharist’s.

You know that our particular parish, as with so many parishes today, provide many opportunities to the clergy of which we only have the time and energy to undertake a portion. It is easy in this situation for persons to feel we have no time for them. I am saddened about this and say again, as I have said before, that if anyone wishes to talk about matters with one of the clergy, please get in touch. Seeking to respond to such requests is a priority. Have a word after a service, give us a phone call, whatever helps best; we will do our best to respond.

In the Eucharist Jesus gives his people the most wonderful gift; let us all express our thankfulness by using this gift as he would wish us to.
