Flavours of Summer

The sun shone with such warmth and constancy for Mary and Brian Shaw’s Summer Lunch that there could be no doubt that the occasion had been truly blessed. So warm was it that an amazing variety of measures had been employed to protect mere mortals from the sun’s generosity, from lashings of sun cream through fetching headgear to parasols and borrowed gazebos. The trees’ shade was bagged by the wise who came early.

Welcomed by our hosts and refreshed by cool drinks, including the seasonal Pimms, around forty happy people settled down to enjoy an afternoon of gentle pleasures, not least the plentiful and excellent lunch which stemmed the buzz of conversation only briefly and gave us all enough energy to forgo the afternoon nap and start again.

There were animals to find and games to play; there were plants to inspect and the stream for paddling; there were prizes to win and raffles to try while the laughter rose and decorum disappeared. Time seemed to slow down to accommodate our relaxation. And all the while, Mary and Brian’s beautiful and much-loved garden cocooned and inspired us until it was time to take up the pace of life again and go home. No cabaret can compete with Nature!

Our thanks for such a splendid interlude go to Mary and Brian, for their warm and generous hospitality on the day and also for the unseen efforts which made the day itself so relaxed and seem so effortless. All Saints Restoration Appeal has benefited from the monetary proceeds of the occasion. Those of us fortunate to be there have benefited more than can be measured.
