Tonight
over 30 people will be sleeping rough in Margaret
is 52 and suffers from severe depression. She spent her
first night sleeping rough, sitting in a bus shelter.
Matthew is 20, doesnt drink or take drugs but like
many of our clients, he became homeless after a
relationship breakdown. He gets into a sleeping bag each
night, in a corner of a park. We are
currently discussing with others the possibility of
providing some sort of night shelter in the town. How or
where we dont yet know only that no one should have
to sleep outside on these bitterly cold nights. On a
happier note: you may have read in the local papers about
the recent launch of Food For Thought. This is a
community food share scheme which will make life more
comfortable for those families in crisis, old people and
children in our town who do not get enough to eat. The
scheme will be run through Maidstone Day Centre by staff
and volunteers. Local manufacturers and traders have
agreed to donate their unsold (but in date) food to be
distributed to those in need. We are fortunate to receive
generous amounts of food from Harvest Festivals in
schools and churches and this Christmas we will once more
benefit from an appeal by the Kent Messenger in
conjunction with local supermarkets. The Downs Mail is
also supporting Maidstone Day Centre. We are delighted
that Bakers Oven have provided a brand new Peugeot van to
collect and deliver the food but we still need more
drivers. For a leaflet and more information about Food
For Thought and volunteering please contact Julie
