Baby Jesus – my very first Bible stories
By Lois Rock £4.99 ISBN 0745949673

This charming board book tells the much loved story of Mary, Jesus, shepherds, angels and wise men. The story fills six double-page spreads. There is also a spread of special words from the story for children to learn to recognise and say, and another spread with a Christmas prayer.

The book is derived from the award-winning My Very First Bible that has sold over 185,000 copies worldwide.

Walking with Jesus through Advent and Christmas
By Murray McBride £9.99 ISBN 1841013609

A fun and flexible resource that has been designed as a biblical ‘story map’ to guide readers on a spiritual journey as they prepare for the Christmas period.

It would be suitable for individuals, families, church-based children’s groups or schools as part of daily devotion or a weekly project. The book includes photocopy permission, contains 31 daily reflections, full instructions for building up the story map and suggestions for prayer and activities.

Imaginative use is made of the idea of a ‘visual pilgrimage’, as accompanying the story map itself is a large ‘Maporama’ which gives the geographical setting of the story, allowing both children and adults to stand in the shoes of those involved in the very first Christmas.

Murray McBride first learnt to communicate the Christian faith with children and young people as a full time youth worker. He trained as an evangelist with the Church of England's Church Army and, for over 10 years, led missions and supported local churches in their outreach to the community. An award winning evangelist, he regularly trains others in creatively sharing the faith.

And You Visited Me
By Penny Wheat with Jan Greenough £6.99 ISBN 1854246828

Penny Wheat, a silversmith who lectures in art and design at a college in Stafford, found an old paperback about the convicted killer James Hanratty. In it she learned that his conviction might have been unsafe, and something awoke in her: a lifelong concern for those in prison. Recently converted, but trapped in a miserable marriage, she started to write and visit first one prisoner, then a second. Then a TV programme prompted her to contact Lifelines, an organisation which sets up links to men and women on Death Row – and a letter arrived from a prisoner in Tennessee.

Penny paid the first of many visits to the States in October 1993. As she learned more about the American system of justice: sometimes excellent, sometimes arbitrary and prejudiced, her compassion deepened for those, mainly black, prisoners caught in it. She learned that not all Death Rows are alike: some states more eager to kill than others, notably Texas, Florida and Missouri. She writes: “How can the disciples of one who was executed, by the state be so ready to embrace the same punishment for others?”

Through her we meet Tommy, muscular, patient and thoughtful; Jose, the Mexican artist; and others who are caught up in the grinding penal system – all vulnerable, human, and real.

Designers of the Future
By Gareth Jones £8.99 ISBN 1854247085

What does the Christian faith have to offer? Christians believe that we are made in God’s image, and demonstrate something of our Maker’s creativity. We are also stewards of his creation. We should therefore win control of diseases, for example. We should tackle Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and injuries to the spinal cord. Used responsibly, science can serve God.

But what are the guidelines? Many Christians believe that stem cell research, for example, is a step too far. In this coherent, engaging and human book Professor Gareth Jones tackles tough topics: Who designs designer babies? What is special about the human embryo? He addresses the limits of stem cell research; the world of clones and cyborgs; and the challenge of repairing and enhancing people. He observes, “The balance between being saints and sinners requires immense wisdom, discernment and understanding, all of which are enhanced by a living relationship with the God who cares for us and who experienced human existence in the person of Jesus Christ.”

D. GARETH JONES is Professor of Anatomy and Structural Biology at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) at the same university. A neuroscientist, he has written extensively on bioethical issues.

Dear Bible I have a Problem
By Mike Coles £6.99 ISBN 1841013684

A highly imaginative book, in which the author draws on his years of experience as a school counsellor and tutor to devise a ‘problem-page’ approach to applying Bible teaching to everyday life.

It tackles difficult issues facing many Christians, especially younger people, including unanswered prayer, loneliness, unwanted pregnancy, stress, euthanasia, peer pressure and debt. It indicates sensitively that there are not always easy answers but, with humour and tact, reviews each situation in the light of the fact that God’s promise and hope is always with us.

Mike Coles is Head of RE at Sir John Cass Church of England Secondary School, Stepney, East London.
